Mesagne
Come sempre, oltre alle città, vale la pena visitare anche i borghi più o meno conosciuti. A pochi chilometri da Brindisi, si trova Mesagne, che si sviluppa intorno al suo castello e che, nonostante oggi sia un piccolo comune, storicamente è sempre stato un centro importante nella regione e indipendente dai centri vicini.
Siamo passati anche per Carovigno e San Vito dei Normanni, ma la pioggia non ci ha dato un attimo di tregua, quindi purtroppo non siamo riusciti a fare delle belle foto. Però vale sicuramenente la pena di fermarsi per una passeggiata!
As in the rest of Italy, in Puglia too, it is worth visiting also the smaller cities and the lesser-known villages. A few kilometres from Brindisi lies Mesagne, which is built around its castle and which, although today it is a small town, has historically always been an important centre in the region, independent of its neighbours.
We also passed through Carovigno and San Vito dei Normanni, but the rain gave us no break, so unfortunately we weren’t able to take any good photos. However, it’s certainly worth stopping for a stroll!

Nel castello è ospitato un piccolo museo che raccoglie i reparti provenienti per la maggior parte da antiche tombe scoperte nel piccolo borgo, abitato fin dai tempi antichi dei Messapi.
The castle houses a small museum displaying all the artefacts found in ancient tombs discovered in the little village, which has been inhabited since the ancient times of the Messapians.

Ostuni
Non potevamo non visitare anche la famosa "città bianca" di Ostuni arroccata su una collina con le sue caratteristiche mura imbiancate di calce e la grande Cattedrale che domina dall'alto la bella piazza cittadina.
Nel centro storico gli edifici, piazze e le chiese sono di Pietra di Ostuni, una roccia calcarea di colore bianco avorio.
Le mura vengono regolarmente rinfrescate da associazioni di cittadini che mantengono viva l'antica tradizione usando gli strumenti tradizionali: pennelli di crine di cavallo con lunghi manici e la calce creata nei forni locali. La tradizione deriva dalle proprietà antisettiche della calce che permise alla città di sopravvivere varie epidemie.
We also did not miss to visit the famous ‘white city’ of Ostuni, with its characteristic whitewashed walls and the grand cathedral overlooking the beautiful town square. In the old town all the buidings, squares and chruches are made of "Pietra di Ostuni", an ivory-white mineral.
The walls are regularly repainted by local voluntary groups who keep the ancient tradition alive using traditional tools: horsehair brushes with long handles and lime produced in local kilns. The tradition stems from the antiseptic properties of lime, which enabled the town to survive various epidemics.
Tutti questi borghi sono stati costruiti nell'entroterra, nelle campagne ancora oggi puntinate di olivi, lontano dal mare da cui potevano arrivare invasori e pirati. Per questo motivo la costa pugliese è disseminata di torri di vedetta.
All these towns were built inland, in the countryside still today dotted with olive trees, far from the sea from which invaders and pirates could attach. This is why the Apulian coast is dotted with watchtowers.
